Horse Evaluation I

Class
This course is designed to introduce the student to the basic knowledge involved in the selection and appraisal of horses. Three hours lecture per week.
Course Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course each student shall be given the opportunity to:

  1. Describe the qualifications of a judge.
  2. List the factors of evaluation.
  3. Identify the external parts of the horse.
  4. Describe the ideal animal.
  5. List the rules governing performance classes.
  6. Describe the functional anatomy of the horse.
  7. Identify the muscle system of the horse.
  8. Identify the skeletal system of the horse
  9. Explain form-to-function in relation to various parts of the horse.
  10. Describe the theory of form to function as it relates to horse evaluation.
  11. Utilize the theory to evaluate halter horses.
  12. Evaluate the horse in various performance events.
  13. Evaluate the horse in Western riding events.
  14. Evaluate the horse in English riding events.
  15. Present oral reasons to defend placing.
  16. Describe the procedure to take notes.
  17. Describe the procedure to present oral reasons.

Evaluation Standards

Instructor evaluation of the student’s competency in each subject area will be measured during the semester by written examination and by laboratory exercises.

3 Tests 50%
1 final exam 25%
Lab practical 25%
Total 100%

Grades will be based on the percentages made from each of the areas listed above along with attitude, attendance, and participation.
