Applied Music

Individual instruction in violin (1101, 1102), composition (1120), voice (1121), trumpet/horn (1131), trombone (1141), drums (1151), saxophone/flute (1161), guitar (1171), bass guitar (1181), or piano (1191). Subject to availability of instructors. Each course may be repeated for credit to a maximum of 20 hours in this area. Two hours lab per week.

Course Requirements

  • Practice and preparation for each lesson
  • Regular and punctual attendance (school-sponsored activities constitute excused absences)
  • Professional attitude; artistic, technical, and intellectual progress
Course Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Play/sing / write music stylistically with proper performance / compositional technique.
  • Trace briefly the historical development of their respective instrument / voice / genre(s) .
  • Perform appropriate and characteristic literature for the instrument/voice.
  • Identify various styles of performance / composition appropriate to the composer, genre, and musical period.
  • Perform / compose styles of music interpretively in classical, jazz, pop, and/or rock genres, as assigned by the instructor.
  • Display technical and artistic proficiency in scales, etudes, and/or solo repertoire, as assigned by instructor.
Evaluation Standards

Students are graded in each of the following areas:

  • Attendance and preparation
  • Proficiency in music theory, as assigned / determined by instructor;
  • Written theory work and/or biographies of composers as assigned by instructor;
  • Satisfactory performance of composition(s) and/or etude(s) prepared/written for lessons.
Required Materials
Instructor will evaluate student’s level of ability at first meeting and decide on appropriate materials to be employed thereafter.

Grading Calculation:

Weatherford College also provides the Coyote Pantry. The Pantry maintains boxed and canned foods for students in need. The location of the Coyote Pantry is two blocks west of the Weatherford campus at the Baptist Student Ministry (118 E. Park Ave., Weatherford).
