Introductory Chemistry - Allied Health Emphasis

Class

Survey of general, organic, and biological chemistry with emphasis on applications to the human body. Topics may include inorganic, organic, biochemistry, food/physiological chemistry, and environmental chemistry. These principles will be illustrated in an accompanying laboratory. THIS COURSE IS INTENDED FOR NON-SCIENCE OR ALLIED HEALTH STUDENTS. This course also serves as an optional introductory course prior to taking Chem 1411 or Biol 2401. Three hours lecture and three hours laboratory per week. 4 hours of credit.

Course Learning Objectives

Upon completion of Chem 1406, the student will be able to:

-make measurements and use measurements in calculation with appropriate units and significant figures

-describe states of matter and energy changes in chemical processes

-describe the structure of the atom and use the periodic table to predict physical and chemical properties

-write names and formulas for compounds according to IUPAC rules

-write and balance equations and apply the mole concept to calculate stoichiometric quantities

-describe gas behavior and the relationship between gas properties

-describe solution composition and concentration

-identify acids and bases, describe acid/base behavior in living systems

-describe nuclear processes and their applications in the medical profession

-describe structure and behavior of classes of organic molecules

-describe structure and function of important biomolecules including carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, and proteins

-describe important metabolic pathways and the associated energy changes

-use standard lab equipment to efficiently and safely gather scientific data
