Orientation to Cosmetology

Class

An overview of the skills and knowledge necessary for the field of cosmetology.

Course Learning Objectives

Explain the origins of appearance enhancement.  List the principles that contribute to personal and professional success.  Understand the importance of personal hygiene.  Conduct a successful client consultation/needs assessment.

  1. Develop a positive attitude toward other people.
  2. Exhibit a concern for ethics when dealing with clients and co-workers.
  3. Set up and use sanitizers according to directions before any service.
  4. Select and use chemical agents as needed for sanitation.
  5. Practice sanitation rulings in the lab according to the Texas Cosmetology Statutes.
  6. Identify and explain forms of bacteria.

TASKS:

  1. Develop a positive attitude toward other people.

    2. Explain why poise and confidence are factors in a successful career.
    3. List qualities of effective communication.
  2. Exhibit a concern for ethics when dealing with clients and co-workers.
    1. Analyze the importance of ethics in dealing with the public.
    2. Pass a written exam on personality development including ethics, sanitation and bacteriology.
  3. Set up and use sanitizers according to directions before any service.
    1. Prepare disinfectant container for service.
    2. Sanitize implements using disinfectant container.
    3. Sanitize cutting implements with EPA tuberculocidal solution.
  4. Select and use chemical agents as needed for disinfecting.
    1. Combs and brushes and properly sanitized in disinfectant solution and properly placed in a closed container until ready.
  5. Practice the sanitation rulings in the lab according to the Texas Cosmetology Statues.
    1. Discuss care of towels.
    2. Explain maintenance of capes.
    3. Explain the procedure for disinfecting manicure instruments.
    4. Discuss labeling of containers.
    5. Discuss the ruling of shirts and shoes being required.
    6. Explain how a cosmetologist handles infectious diseases.
  6. Identify and explain the forms of bacteria.
    1. Define bacteria and their classifications through a written exam.
    2. Explain the movement of bacteria.
    3. Define viruses.
    4. Define parasites.
    5. Define contagious, disease carrier, and immunities.
    6. Discuss bacteria growth and reproduction.
Required Textbooks

Standard Textbook of Cosmetology, 2016 ed., Milady Publishing Company.

EQUIPMENT/SUPPLIES:  EPA Registered Tuberculocidal Disinfectant, combs, brushes, cotton, dry sanitizer, set sanitizer, textbook, paper, and pencil.

Evaluation Standards

Individual practical sheet with criteria included, written unit test, final written and practical exam.

Instructional Methods

Conducted in the Cosmetology Lab with hands-on experience dealing with selection of chemicals.  Sanitary procedures in conjunction with various services offered in a salon.  Audio-visual aids, lecture and demonstrations by the instructor will be included.

Program Learning Outcomes

Cosmetology Program the student will be able to:

  • Project a positive attitude and a sense of personal integrity and self-confidence.
  • Practice effective communication skills, visual poise, and proper grooming.
  • Respect the need to deliver worthy service for value received in an employer-employee relationship.
  • State the benefits of prioritizing time efficiently.
  • Use proven strategies to build a clientele.
  • List safety and sanitation procedures for use of equipment, implements, and treatments.
  • Perform basic manipulative skills in the areas of hairstyling, hair shaping, hair coloring, texture services, scalp and hair conditioning, skin and makeup, manicure and pedicures.
  • Perform the basic analytical skills to determine proper makeup, hairstyle, and color application for the client’s overall image.
  • Apply learned theory, technical information and related matter to assure sound judgments, decisions, and procedures.
  • Apply learned theory, manipulative skills and analytical skills to obtain licensure and competency in entry-level positions in cosmetology or a related career field.
