Fundamentals of Cosmetology

Class

A course in the basic fundamentals of cosmetology.  Topics include service preparation, manicure, facial, chemical services, shampoo, hair cut, set styling, comb out and salon management.

Course Learning Objectives

Describe the structure and composition of the skin.  Name and describe the structures of the hair root.  Explain the two most important requirements for scalp care.

  6. Recognize the scalp and hair disorders commonly seen in the salon and school and know which can be treated there.
  7. List methods of draping and preparing the client for cosmetology services.
  8. Prescribe type of shampoo and conditioners needed.
  9. Recommend a hair shape for client in relation to her needs.
  10. Pass the practical competency examination.

Standard Textbook of Cosmetology, 2016 ed., Milady Publishing Company.

EQUIPMENT/SUPPLIES:  Brushes, cape, clippies, combs, finger wave lotion, hair dryer, wax, curling iron, wig stand and blow dryer.

Evaluation Standards

The student will be evaluated based on practical applications, and written examination.

    3. Demonstrate a lash and brow dye on client or student.
    4. With another student or client demonstrate a wax of the brows.
    5. Demonstrate a complete day-time facial on student or client.
    6. Demonstrate a basic wet set; client, student or mannequin.
    7. Demonstrate a precision blow dry procedure
    8. Section and demonstrate an iron curl style.
    9. Demonstrate a manicure and pedicure on a student.

    4. Define hair density and hair color in relation to density.
    5. Describe the various types of hair growth patterns.
    6. Pass a written exam over the purpose and structure of hair.
  5. Define basic scalp care.
    1. Explain the purpose of scalp manipulations.
    2. Perform a scalp treatment for dry scalp.
    3. Perform a scalp treatment for oily scalp.
    4. Describe the difference between dry and oily scalp treatment.
  6. Recognize the scalp and hair disorders commonly seen in the salon and school and know which can be treated there.

    2. Name the diseases that a cosmetologist cannot work on.
    3. What disorders can be worked on in the salon.

    3. Demonstrate a drape for dry hair and comb-out services.

    3. Explain pH scale as it relates to the acid mantle.
    4. Analyze the types of shampoos used and their purpose.
    5. Demonstrate a basic shampoo procedure.
    6. Explain special shampoo procedures.
    7. Explain uses of rinses and conditioners.
    8. Relate safety and sanitary precautions.
  9. Recommend a hair shape for client in relation to her needs.

Instructional Methods

This course will be conducted in a cosmetology lab, hands-on experience requiring audio-visuals, transparencies and class demonstrations will constitute the major portion of the class.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Cosmetology Program the student will be able to:

  • State the benefits of prioritizing time efficiently.
  • Use proven strategies to build a clientele.
  • List safety and sanitation procedures for use of equipment, implements, and treatments.
  • Perform basic manipulative skills in the areas of hairstyling, hair shaping, hair coloring, texture services, scalp and hair conditioning, skin and makeup, manicure and pedicures.
  • Perform the basic analytical skills to determine proper makeup, hairstyle, and color application for the client’s overall image.
  • Apply learned theory, technical information and related matter to assure sound judgments, decisions, and procedures.
  • Apply learned theory, manipulative skills and analytical skills to obtain licensure and competency in entry-level positions in cosmetology or a related career field.
