Presentation of the theory and practice of nail technology. Topics include terminology, application, and workplace competencies related to nail technology.
Describe the structure and composition of nails. List and describe the various disorders and irregularities of nails. Identify the four types of nail implements and/or tools required to perform a manicure. Identify and explain the equipment used when performing pedicures. Identify the supplies, in addition to your basic manicuring table, that you need for nail application. Explain monomer liquid and polymer powder nail enhancement chemistry and how it works.

EQUIPMENT/SUPPLIES: Manicuring table and stool, implements, supplies and cosmetics necessary for a manicure and pedicure. Artificial nail cosmetics and implements. Textbook, and nail book.
The student will be evaluated using individual practical sheets with the criterion for each task identified.

- Pass a written exam in diseases and disorders of the nails.
- Discuss the various types of artificial nails.
- Outline the procedure for sculptured nails.
- Apply nail tips on two nails within 30 minutes following the guidelines given.
- Apply two natural-looking, sculptured nails within 30 minutes.
- Outline the procedure for nail wrapping.
- Discuss the cosmetics and procedures for manicuring.
- Explain the types of manicuring implements and their use.
- Outline the procedure for a plain manicure.
- Discuss the proper application of nail polish and creative nail polish.
- Outline the procedure for a man’s manicure.
- Complete a professional manicure within 40 minutes.
- Explain the safety and sanitary rules for manicuring.
- Demonstrate the procedure for a pedicure.
- Explain the procedure for a foot massage.
- Discuss the safety and sanitary rules for pedicuring.
- Complete a professional pedicure within 40 minutes.
This course will be conducted in a cosmetology lab and classroom using hands-on experience that will require the student to create artificial nails with various techniques. Manicuring, pedicuring and other nail skill demonstrations will be used in conjunction with lectures.
Upon completion of the Cosmetology Program the student will be able to:

- Perform basic manipulative skills in the areas of hairstyling, hair shaping, hair coloring, texture services, scalp and hair conditioning, skin and makeup, manicure and pedicures.
- Perform the basic analytical skills to determine proper makeup, hairstyle, and color application for the client’s overall image.
- Apply learned theory, technical information and related matter to assure sound judgments, decisions, and procedures.
- Apply learned theory, manipulative skills and analytical skills to obtain licensure and competency in entry-level positions in cosmetology or a related career field.
