Salon Development

Class

Exploration of salon development.  Topics include professional ethics and goals, salon operation, and record keeping.

Course Learning Objectives

Know how to explore the job market, research potential employers, and operate within the legal aspects of employment.  Describe what is expected of a new employee and what this means in terms of your everyday behavior.  Understand the responsibilities of a booth renter.

  1. Develop a positive attitude toward other people.
  2. Exhibit a concern for ethics when dealing with clients and co-workers.
  3. Create a salon portfolio; demonstrate an understanding of salon operations; and demonstrate organizational skills related to salon management.
  4. Be aware of the opportunities available in the field of cosmetology.
Required Textbooks

Standard Textbook of Cosmetology, 2016 ed., Milady Publishing Company.

EQUIPMENT/SUPPLIES:  Textbook, appointment book, telephone, overhead projector and visual aids.

Evaluation Standards

The student will be evaluated using individual practical sheets with the criterion for each task identified.  Pass a written test on personality development, ethics, and salon development and planning

Instructional Methods

This course will be conducted in a cosmetology lab setting utilizing the receptionist’s duties on a rotating schedule for each student.  The activities during the class will include lectures and audio-visual aids.  Some field trips will be included.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Cosmetology Program the student will be able to:

  • Project a positive attitude and a sense of personal integrity and self-confidence.
  • Practice effective communication skills, visual poise, and proper grooming.
  • Respect the need to deliver worthy service for value received in an employer-employee relationship.
  • State the benefits of prioritizing time efficiently.
  • Use proven strategies to build a clientele.
  • List safety and sanitation procedures for use of equipment, implements, and treatments.
  • Perform basic manipulative skills in the areas of hairstyling, hair shaping, hair coloring, texture services, scalp and hair conditioning, skin and makeup, manicure and pedicures.
  • Perform the basic analytical skills to determine proper makeup, hairstyle, and color application for the client’s overall image.
  • Apply learned theory, technical information and related matter to assure sound judgments, decisions, and procedures.
  • Apply learned theory, manipulative skills and analytical skills to obtain licensure and competency in entry-level positions in cosmetology or a related career field.
