Preparation for the Texas Cosmetology Commission Operator Examination.

Course Learning Objectives

The student will exhibit the skills required for the completion of the Texas Cosmetology practical examination and complete the theory curriculum for the Texas Cosmetology Commission theory examination.\

  1. Discuss the general information for obtaining a Texas Cosmetology License.
  2. Check in information at TDLR.
  3. Practical examination applications set-up
Required Textbooks

Standard Textbook of Cosmetology, 2016 ed., Milady Publishing Company. 

EQUIPMENT/SUPPLIES:  All supplies and equipment needed for the practical cosmetology exam.  The theory exam will be given on the computer using the computerized “Redbook” examination.

Evaluation Standards

The student will be evaluated on each portion of the practical exam and graded according to the Texas Department of Licensing requirements.

Course Progression
  1. Discuss the general information for obtaining a Texas Cosmetology License.
    1. Complete 1500 hour course in allotted time.
    2. Send completed information to TDLR.
  2. Check in information at TDLR.
    1. List supplies needed for the examination.
    2. Explain the first 6 rules of sanitation.
    3. Discuss the preparation of black models hair before the examination
    4. List the types of rollers that are not permissible.
    5. List the material used for comb-out caps and shampoo caps.
    6. Explain when a mannequin may be used.
  3. Practical examination applications.
    1. Service preparation
      1. Demonstrate sanitary draping of client/mannequin.
      2. List supplies needed.
    2. Manicure
      1. Demonstrate manicure procedure.
      2. Practice sanitation procedures.
      3. Discuss prerequisites of model.
    3. Facial
      1. Demonstrate facial procedure
      2. List supplies needed.
      3. Demonstrate sanitation and prerequisites of model.
    4. Mock Applications
      1. Demonstrate virgin tint to darken, using correct section.
      2. Demonstrate bleach retouch using correct procedure.
      3. Demonstrate chemical relaxer.
    5. Shampoo
      1. Demonstrate shampooing.
      2. Discuss sanitation of shampooing.
    6. Demonstration of curls/wet set
      1. Following criteria of TDLR, complete a wet set within 30 minutes
    7. Comb-out
      1. Following line of set, comb-out style
      2. List supplies needed for a comb-out.
Instructional Methods

This course will be conducted in a cosmetology lab setting utilizing the practical portion of the cosmetology exam.  Pass a written exam covering the theory portion with a grade no lower than 75.

Upon completion of the Cosmetology Program the student will be able to:

  • Perform basic manipulative skills in the areas of hairstyling, hair shaping, hair coloring, texture services, scalp and hair conditioning, skin and makeup, manicure and pedicures.
  • Perform the basic analytical skills to determine proper makeup, hairstyle, and color application for the client’s overall image.
  • Apply learned theory, technical information and related matter to assure sound judgments, decisions, and procedures.
  • Apply learned theory, manipulative skills and analytical skills to obtain licensure and competency in entry-level positions in cosmetology or a related career field.
