DEVR0100 is an option for students whose scores on the state-required assessment test, or other academic indicators, demonstrate a need for focused, individualized assistance to master specific reading skills in a flexible schedule format. DEVR0100 will not transfer but will count for non-degree credit from Weatherford College. Permission is required. Completion of an individually-prepared tutorial plan requiring 12 hours of tutorials supervised by the assigned instructor is mandatory. Students who are not TSI-complete in Reading must also take the Reading portion of the appropriate assessment test.
Upon successful completion of the individualized tutorial plan, students will demonstrate improved critical reading and thinking skills in each of the areas of assessment indicated through completion of activities designed to enable them to:
- Determine the meaning of words and phrases using reading passages with multiple meanings, unfamiliar and uncommon words and phrases, and figurative expressions.
- Locate the main idea and supporting details in written material through identifying explicit and implicit main ideas and recognizing ideas that support, illustrate, or elaborate the main idea of a passage.
- Identify a writer's purpose, viewpoint, and meaning through analysis of word choice, organizational patterns, audience, tone, and viewpoint.
- Analyze the relationships among ideas in written material and draw conclusions using reading passages to recognize patterns for organizing ideas and to draw logical conclusions from information presented.
- Use critical reasoning skills to evaluate written material using a reading passage to recognize assumptions fundamental to a writer's argument, evaluate the supporting details of a writer's argument, and judge the logic and validity of a writer's argument.
- Apply study skills to reading assignments including note-taking; summarizing; interpreting charts, graphs, and tables; and following directions.
