DEVW0100 is an option for developmental writing students whose scores on the state-required assessment test, or other academic indicators, demonstrate a need for focused, individualized assistance to master specific writing skills in a flexible schedule format. Permission of the Developmental Writing/Reading Department Chair is required. DEVW 0100 will not transfer to a senior institution but will count for non-degree credit from Weatherford College. Completion of an individually-prepared tutorial plan requiring 12 hours of tutorials per semester is mandatory. Students who are not TSI-complete in Writing must re-test.
Upon successful completion of the individualized tutorial plan, students will demonstrate improved critical reading and thinking skills in each of the areas of assessment indicated through completion of activities designed to enable them to:
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of spelling, punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, and usage.
- Demonstrate familiarity with and ability to use the writing process to develop essays in paragraphs that include specific, complex details unified around a topic sentence using reasons, facts, statistics, examples, narratives/anecdotes, and/or references to authorities.
- Recognize various types of paragraphs including introductory, concluding, and body paragraphs utilizing a variety of patterns of development.
- Read and respond to articles by identifying main ideas, establishing and presenting opinions about those ideas, and/or summarizing/paraphrasing the material.
- Recognize and use Modern Language Association (MLA) style.
- Demonstrate the ability to revise writing to meet specific assignment criteria.
- Enter English 1301 Freshman Composition prepared for the rigors of college-level writing.
