Introduction to Keyboarding

Skill development in keyboarding techniques. Emphasis on the development of acceptable speed and accuracy.
Course Learning Objectives

  • Learn the alphabetic keyboard by touch
  • Learn the number and symbol keys
  • Develop speed and accuracy in keyboarding
  • Learn to type a personal business letter
  • All work must be completed by the specified times. Most assignments are due by midnight on Sunday but follow the website carefully. Do NOT wait until the last moment to submit assignments. Sometimes internet connections go down, or your computer may have a virus or other problem, etc. Plan accordingly and practice every day in order to increase your speeds and improve your accuracy so that you do well in this course.
  • Late work is NOT allowed. Assignments must be submitted on time in order to receive credit. Make certain to keep up with all work and practice, practice to master the keyboard and improve your keyboarding speeds. You are responsible for reading all directions in the textbook and on the website.
  • You must report to the campus for proctored exams.
Required Textbooks
Required Text— Paradigm Keyboarding: SESS.1-30 w/ access 6th ed 978-0-7638-4787-6.

Required Software

Word 2010 or Word 2013 or Mac software that can save files in the .doc or .docx format. Memory stick for transferring files from home to lab if working on campus
Evaluation Standards

The final course grade will be calculated upon the following components:

A= 89.5-100%
B= 79.5-89.4%
C=69.5-79.4%
D=59.5-69.4%
F=0-59.4%

Daily assignments—20%
Ten timed writings—40%
Exams-40%

Grading Scale for Timed Writings
A=35-40 wpm
B=30-35
C=25-29
D=20-24

The best ten 3-minute timed writings will be used for evaluation purposes using the above scale.
