Music Appreciation

Class
Understanding music through the study of cultural periods, major composers, and musical elements, illustrated with audio recordings and live performances. Course does not apply to a music major degree. 3 hours lecture per week.
Course Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Identify musical works and elements in a variety of styles.
  2. Analyze the elements and structures of music using appropriate terminology.
  3. Critically evaluate the influence of social, political, technological, and/or cultural ideas on music.
  4. Articulate the significance of music as an art form within historical, cultural and social contexts.
  5. Identify the composer of a given piece by listening to it.
  6. Identify the title of a given piece by listening to it.
  7. Identify the musical genre of a given piece by listening to it.
  8. Identify the musical era classification of a given piece by listening to it.
  9. Identify the differences in the various musical era classifications.
  10. Identify the sound of the common instruments used in symphonic works.
  11. Interpret the common vocabulary and terms used in music.
  12. Understand historical significance of each musical period.

Evaluation Standards

The above learning outcomes will be assessed through the administration of quizzes, exams and assignments, as determined by the instructor, as well as participation in class discussion or forums (in online sections), according to the following grading method:

  1. Quizzes, exams, forum posts, and other assignments = 80%
  2. Class participation/forums = 20%
