Music Theory II

Analysis and writing of tonal melody and diatonic harmony up to and including the chords. Analysis and writing of small compositional forms. Three hours lecture per week.

Course Requirements

Attendance – Daily attendance will be taken. Three or more unexcused absences will lower semester grade by one letter.

  • Class Participation – Regular input and willingness to answer questions
  • Homework – Pages from workbook and other assigned work.
  • Mid Term
  • Final Exam – Final Exam is cumulative.
Course Learning Objectives

Students will learn concepts and common practices in music theory, functional harmony of the 17th through 19th century, and application of voice leading principles, part writing, and compositional form. These objectives will be assessed through the administration of 4 (four) tests.

After successfully completing MUSI 1312, students will demonstrate mastery of the following competencies:

Melodic Line/Part Writing
Write a melodic line appropriate in pitch, phrase, rhythm, and form with supporting parts conforming to voice leading rules suitable for the figured-bass period.

Harmonic Analysis
The student will be able to analyze through figured bass symbols the harmonies of a simple Bach chorale. The student will also be able to discuss the benefits and shortcomings of this approach.
