Practical, general workplace training supported by an individualized learning plan developed by the employer, college, and student.
ASRT and ARRT guidelines will be utilized for clinical practice, competency performance of exams, proper radiation protection, patient care and communication.
Performance Objectives: Perform specific requirements and document as part of the application for certification and registration with ARRT. A. Initial MQSA (Mammography Quality Standards Act) 1. Complete 25 supervised mammography exam 2. Document as required by MQSA and ARRT. B. Mammographic Exams (SCANS F-1A,B,D,E;2A,B,C,D,E,F;3A,B,C,D,E;C-1A,C;2A,B,C,D E,F;3A,B,C) 1. Perform 75 (screening or diagnostic) exams on a patient not a phantom. 2. Provide for patient comfort and cooperation by familiarizing patient with the equipment and procedure, stressing the need for compression. 3. Solicit and record patient clinical history relevant to the performance and interpretation of the mammographic exam. 4. Document location of lumps, scars, moles, etc. by means of radiopaque markers on breast and/or diagram on clinical information sheet. 5. Respond to patient questions on BSE, CBE, patient dose, possible need for additional projections, ACS guidelines for screening mammography, and other breast imaging procedures. Mammographic Procedure (SCANS: F-1C,D,E;2A,B,C,D,E,F;3A,D,E. C- 1A,C;2A,C;3A,B,C,D;4A,B;5A,B,C) 1. Select equipment appropriate to the patient and the examination to be performed (e.g., image receptors, grids, compression plates). 2. Select exposure factors based upon breast tissue density, patient’s age, numerical compression scale, and equipment characteristics. 3. Document breast imaged and projection used. 4. Position patient and equipment to provide projections specified by department protocol or requisition. 5. Evaluate the images to assure that they contain proper identification and are of diagnostic quality. C. Quality Control (QC) (SCANS-1A,B,2B,C,E,F,3A,D,5A,B,C ) 1. Participate in the performance, evaluation and recording of all QC tests. 2. Follow manufacturer recommendations for date intervals.
* If there are any QC requirements that are not available due to the type of equipment in your facility, an exemption must be granted prior to submission of the application for certification and registration . For questions call Clinical Experience Requirements Department at 651-687-0048, ext 8570. QC Documentation 1. Laser Imager QC (10) 2. Interpretation Workstation (5) 3. Monitor Cleaning (5) 4. Phantom Images (5) 4. Artifact Evaluation (5) 5. SNR, CNR, MTF, as required by manufacturer (5) 6. Compression Force (2) 7. Repeat Analysis (2) 8. Visual checklist (2) 9. Review of medical Physicist’s Annual Survey Report (1) D. Radiographic Critique/Interpretation (10) Must review at least 10 mammographic exams with a MQSA qualified interpreting physician to evaluate radiographic technique, positioning, breast anatomy, and pathology.
Elective Procedures Must observe,assist with or participate in at least four of the following. Needle Localization Breast MRI Breast Ultrasound: Imaging, Biopsy, FNA or cyst aspiration Stereotactic procedure Breast Implant Imaging Ductography/Galactography Diagnostic work-up Clip Placement

Clinical Assignments: Clinical sites will be assigned by the Weatherford College Radiologic Technology Program. The student will be responsible for the clinical orientation with the sites education department before beginning clinical practicum. All required records needed for the clinical education will be given to the program director and clinical site education office before a student attends clinical education. The student will be required to follow all hospital and WC Mammography program policies and procedures.
Method of Evaluation: A= 91%-100%
B= 83%-90%
C= 78%-82%
D= 77%-74%
F= 73%-0%
It is the students responsibility to notify the clinical education site if absent, before scheduled time and the clinical faculty. A student that misses more than 3 days of clinical will receive a grade reduction of 5 points for each day missed after the 3 absences on their final grade. Students do not go to clinical education during Thanksgiving break. There are no make-up days in MAMT 2264 or banked time.
