This course is designed to familiarize the student with common and new practices involved with good management techniques in establishing and maintaining permanent or improved pastures for livestock. Three hours lecture two times per week.
Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the course each student shall be given the opportunity to:
- Describe the history of Texas rangeland.
- Describe the role and functions of the farm manager.
- Identify agriculture problems.
- Discuss the problem solving process.
- List the types of rangeland.
- Identify the types of rangeland.
- Describe the management methods for each type.
- Determine stocking rates for each type.
- Explain the effect of the environment on rangeland.
- List the effects of climate on the rangeland.
- Describe the effects of fire on the range.
- Explain the effects of mechanical disturbance.
- Identify various range plants.
- Discuss improved pasture grasses.
- Outline the special management techniques required.
- Identify improved grass samples.
- Develop a grazing plan for a ranch.
- Describe grazing systems.
- Determine stocking rates.
- Present plan in class.

Evaluation Standards
Instructor evaluation of the student’s competency in each subject area will be measured during the semester by written examination and by laboratory exercises.

Grades will be based on the percentages made from each of the areas listed above along with attitude, attendance, and participation.
