Introduction to Computerized Accounting

Class

Introduction to utilizing the computer in maintaining accounting records, making management decisions, and processing common business applications with primary emphasis on a general ledger package.  Three hours lecture and one hour laboratory per week.

Course Learning Objectives

Define accounting terminology; analyze and record business transactions in a computerized environment; complete the accounting cycle; prepare financial statements; and apply accounting concepts.

Student Learning Outcomes: 

  1. Develop the skills necessary to do general computer accounting for service and merchandising businesses using QuickBooks
  2. Complete exercises using accounts receivable, accounts payable, invoicing, payroll, inventory, and job cost systems using QuickBooks.
  3. Complete the accounting cycle using software and QuickBooks
  4. Prepare financial statements and complete financial statement analysis
  5. Analyze pertinent data

Evaluation Standards

Grading Policy/Procedure and/or Methods of Evaluation. The student's grade will be determined by performance on examinations and/or other course work as assigned by the individual instructor. 


The components and points assigned are as follows:

SmartBook (20 points per chapter)  200 points
Assignments (60 points per chapter) 600 points
Quizzes (20 points per chapter) 200 points
Exams 400 points

Total Points  1,400   points

Grading Scale:
A = 90-100                                                                         
B = 80-89 
C = 70-79 
D = 60-69
F = below 60%                                             

Instructional Methods

Students will complete exercises in both textbooks and answer various questions.  Students will upload various financial statements to prove their work.

Accounting Clerk Certificate

Mission Statement: Accounting Clerk Certificate will give students knowledge and skills in accounting, accounting software, and office practices.
Objective: Students will have general knowledge and skills in accounting needed in business and industry.

Outcomes:

  • Students will apply math skills needed in business
  • Students will apply basic office skills needed in business
