Fundamentals of Cosmetology

Class

A course in the basic fundamentals of cosmetology. Topics include service preparation, manicure, facial, chemical services, shampoo, hair cut, set styling, comb out and salon management.

Course Learning Objectives

Describe the structure and composition of the skin. Name and describe the structures of the hair root. Explain the two most important requirements for scalp care.

Recommend a hair shape for client in relation to her needs.
Pass the practical competency examination.

Standard Textbook of Cosmetology, 2016 ed., Milady Publishing Company.

EQUIPMENT/SUPPLIES: Brushes, cape, clippies, combs, finger wave lotion, hair dryer, wax, curling iron, wig stand and blow dryer.

The student will be evaluated based on practical applications, and written examination.

4. With another student or client demonstrate a wax of the brows.
5. Demonstrate a complete day-time facial on student or client.
6. Demonstrate a basic wet set; client, student or mannequin.

Instructional Methods

This course will be conducted in a cosmetology lab, hands-on experience requiring audio-visuals, transparencies and class demonstrations will constitute the major portion of the class.

Upon completion of the Cosmetology Program the student will be able to:

List safety and sanitation procedures for use of equipment, implements, and treatments.
Perform basic manipulative skills in the areas of hairstyling, hair shaping, hair coloring, texture services, scalp and hair conditioning, skin and makeup, manicure and pedicures.
Perform the basic analytical skills to determine proper makeup, hairstyle, and color application for the client’s overall image.
Apply learned theory, technical information and related matter to assure sound judgments, decisions, and procedures.
Apply learned theory, manipulative skills and analytical skills to obtain licensure and competency in entry-level positions in cosmetology or a related career field.
