Special Topics in Phlebotomy

Class

Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledge, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. This course was designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency. Current topics include: Quality in the Healthcare Setting; Reviewing VP and Dermal Puncture; Professionalism, Resume and Interview, and Clinical Significance of Laboratory Testing.

Course Learning Objectives
  • Create a polished resume that can grow with one throughout one’s professional career, gain self-confidence in the interview process, understand and practice
  • Practice Quality Concepts, develop and autonomous work ethic, and conduct oneself appropriately in a workplace setting. Become familiar with medical pathologies and the testing associated with each.
  • Supplemental instruction on venipuncture and dermal puncture techniques and skills.
  • Investigate analysis errors and complications such as hemolysis.
  • Learn techniques for dealing with special populations in venipuncture and dermal puncture.
  • Understand how to avoid blood culture contamination.
  • Inquire into the meaning of emotional intelligence.
  • Study the history of phlebotomy.
  • Be familiar with GTT testing.
  • Develop autonomy to have Command Presence in the Healthcare Setting.
  • Perform a competent job search online.
  • Demonstrate a command of reference lab web sites: Lab Corp, Quest, CPL, and ARUP for test requirements.
