Practicum

A work-based instruction activity that provides students the opportunity to gain practical experience in the treatment and care of animals. Emphasis is based on practical work experience for which the student has already acquired the necessary theorical knowledge and basic skills. The clinical professional provides direct supervision and determines if compensation is to be granted. Students are required to work 7-10 hours per week in the external learning environment.

Tasks

  1. Demonstratie proficiency in animal restraint. C3,C5,C18,C19, C20,F4,F5,F7,F8,F10,F11,F12, F14
    1. Properly restrain animal for physical examination.
    2. Properly restrain animal for ear examination..
    3. Properly restrain for venipuncture.
    4. Assist in bandaging.
  2. Perform a basic physical examination..(C1,C3,C11,C13,C18,C19, C20,F3,F5,F10,F11, F15)
    1. 1. Determine body temperature.
    2. Evaluate pulse rate, strength and character.
    3. Evaluate respiratory rate and character
    4. Evaluate mucous membrane color and capillary refill time.
  3. Prepare, administer, and dispense medications and fluid therapy. (C18,C19,C20, ,F1,F3,F4,F10,F11)
    1. Reconstitute vaccines aother injectable medications.
    2. Draw medications and vaccines into syringe.
    3. Administer subcutaneous injections.
    4. Administer intramuscular injections.
    5. Perform venipuncture.
    6. Administer oral medication.
    7. Prepare prescriptions.
    8. Set up intravenous drip sets.
    9. Properly operate fluid pump.
  4. Provide basic care of the patient and the patient's environment. .(C1,C5,C7,C18,C19, F8,F10,F11,F12)
    1. Properly sanitize stalls and cages
    2. Properly disinfect equipment and stall or cage.
    3. Provide appropriate bathing and grooming to hospitalized patients.
  5. Provide assistance in surgery preparation and anesthesia. (C1,C5, ,C18,C19,C20,F8,F10,F11)
    1. Properly clean and care for surgical equipment.
    2. Prepare surgical packs.
    3. Autoclave surgical packs and gowns.
    4. Properly operate the anesthetic machine.
  6. Assist in imaging techniques. (C5,C11,C12,C13,C14,C16,C18, C19,C20, ,F2,F4,F8,F10,F11)
    1. Properly measure patient and determine settings on X-ray machine.
    2. Restrain patient for radiography.
    3. Properly develop radiographs.
    4. Record appropriate information in X-ray log.
    5. Provide assistance in restraint and preparation for ultrasound examination.
  7. Participate in dental prophylaxis..(C5,C18,C19,C20,F2,F4,F8,F10,F11)
    1. Set-up necessary dental equipment
    2. Properly evaluate patient for periodontal disease.
    3. Demonstrate knowledge of operation of machinery use of equipment.
    4. Demonstrate knowledge of components of complete dental prophylaxis.
  8. Evaluation will be based on the following:
    1. Completion of required hours.
    2. Completion of required tasks, as permitted by supervisor.
    3. Employer evaluation as communicated in meetings with instructor.

Weatherford College also provides the Coyote Pantry. The Pantry maintains boxed and canned foods for students in need. The location of the Coyote Pantry is two blocks west of the Weatherford campus at the Baptist Student Ministry (118 E. Park Ave., Weatherford). Pantry hours are Mon-Thurs. 8:30 am-4:30 pm and Fri. 8.30 am-12:00 pm (817-599-6586).
SCANS
The Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS} identified competencies in the areas of Resources, Interpersonal, Information, Systems and Technology, and foundation skills in the areas of Basic Skills, Thinking Skills, and Personal Qualities. This Course is part of a program in which each of these compentencies and skills are integrated. The specific SCANS competencies that are recognized throughout this course are noted at the end of the appropriate competencies or task listed.
