Practicum

A work-based instruction activity that provides students the opportunity to gain practical experience in the treatment and care of animals. Emphasis is based on practical work experience for which the student has already acquired the necessary theorical knowledge and basic skills. The clinical professional provides direct supervision and determines if compensation is to be granted. Students are required to work 7-10 hours per week in the external learning environment.

Tasks

  1. Develop plan with supervisor to establish 3 advanced skills objectives. (C5,C8,C9,F4,F5,F6,F13,F14,F15)
    1. Communicate effectively with supervisor to determine realistic skills goals.
    2. Provide written description of goals for supervisor and instructor approval.
    3. Determine method to be used for skill evaluation.
  2. Maintain record of skills performed. (C5,C11,C12,C13,F2,F12,F15)
    1. Develop method to document performance of skill.
    2. Provide document to supervisor for sign-off.
    3. Provide instructor with document as evidence of goal acquistion.
  3. Complete acquisition of skills within set time schedule. (C1,C5,C8,C9,C11,C15,C18,C19,C ,F1,F4,F5,F7,F10,F12,F14,F15,F16)
    1. Set schedule to assure availability of opportunities to complete goals.
    2. Communicate with supervisor and coworkers to insure cooperation.
    3. Acquire knowledge regarding skill being attempted.
    4. Perform skill as instructed by supervisor.
  4. Provide basic care of the patient and the patient's environment. .(C1,C5,C7,C18,C19, F8,F10,F11,F12)
    1. Properly sanitize stalls and cages
    2. Properly disinfect equipment and stall or cage.
    3. Provide appropriate bathing and grooming to hospitalized patients.
  5. Provide assistance in surgery preparation and anesthesia. (C1,C5, ,C18,C19,C20,F8,F10,F11)
    1. Properly clean and care for surgical equipment.
    2. Prepare surgical packs.
    3. Autoclave surgical packs and gowns.
    4. Properly operate the anesthetic machine.
  6. Assist in imaging techniques. (C5,C11,C12,C13,C14,C16,C18, C19,C20, ,F2,F4,F8,F10,F11)
    1. Properly measure patient and determine settings on X-ray machine.
    2. Restrain patient for radiography.
    3. Properly develop radiographs.
    4. Record appropriate information in X-ray log.
    5. Provide assistance in restraint and preparation for ultrasound examination.
  7. Participate in dental prophylaxis..(C5,C18,C19,C20,F2,F4,F8,F10,F11)
    1. Set-up necessary dental equipment
    2. Properly evaluate patient for periodontal disease.
    3. Demonstrate knowledge of operation of machinery use of equipment.
    4. Demonstrate knowledge of components of complete dental prophylaxis.
  8. Evaluation will be based on the following:
    1. Completion of required tasks.
    2. Maintenance of accurate and organized records.
    3. Employer evaluation as communicated in meetings with instructor.

Her office is on the first floor of Student Services. If the student prefers, they may contact their instructor, who can reach out on their behalf. Weatherford College also provides the Coyote Pantry. The Pantry maintains boxed and canned foods for students in need. The location of the Coyote Pantry is two blocks west of the Weatherford campus at the Baptist Student Ministry (118 E. Park Ave., Weatherford). Pantry hours are Mon-Thurs. 8:30 am-4:30 pm and Fri. 8.30 am-12:00 pm (817-599-6586).
SCANS
The Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS} identified competencies in the areas of Resources, Interpersonal, Information, Systems and Technology, and foundation skills in the areas of Basic Skills, Thinking Skills, and Personal Qualities. This Course is part of a program in which each of these compentencies and skills are integrated. The specific SCANS competencies that are recognized throughout this course are noted at the end of the appropriate competencies or task listed.
