Beginning Spanish I

Basic Spanish language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing within a cultural framework. Students will acquire the vocabulary and grammatical structures necessary to communicate and comprehend at the beginner level.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

  • Engage in conversations using level-appropriate grammatical structures including narrating events that take place in the present and producing questions and responses on a variety of topics dealing with everyday life.
  • Demonstrate understanding of level-appropriate spoken Spanish.
  • Write simple sentences and organize them into short paragraphs.
  • Read and comprehend level-appropriate texts. Identify and discuss traditions, customs and values of the Hispanic world.
  • Compare and contrast the traditions, customs and values of the Hispanic world with characteristics of their own culture.

Evaluation Standards

At the beginning of the semester, instructors will provide each student with a course syllabus and outline of the course which includes departmental requirements and the specific requirements of the individual instructor. The grade for the course is weighted as follows:

15% Practice Assignments
15% Application Assignments
20% Quizzes
10% Projects
10% Oral Proficiency Exam (for hybrid sections) Spoken Assignments (for online sections)
10% Participation
10% Midterm Exam
10% Final Exam

Required Materials
  • Internet access. Chrome is the recommended browser.
  • The ability to record yourself either with a microphone on your computer, phone or with headphones. It may be required to use submit videos and/or audio recordings.
  • Photo identification card. This will be used when taking quizzes and tests to verify your identity.

Weatherford College also provides the Coyote Pantry. The Pantry maintains boxed and canned foods for students in need. The location of the Coyote Pantry is two blocks west of the Weatherford campus at the Baptist Student Ministry (118 E. Park Ave., Weatherford). Pantry hours are Mon-Thurs. 8:30 am-4:30 pm and Fri. 8.30 am-12:00 pm (817-599-6586).
