Western Horsemanship I

Management and basic training of stock pleasure and show horses. Topics will include grooming, feeding, care of feet, care of tack, conformation, soundness, basics of riding, and care of facilities. Horse and equipment must be furnished by the student and approval by the instructor. One hour lecture and four hours laboratory per week.
Course Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course each student shall be given the opportunity to:

  1. Recognize basic safety practices in handling horses.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to catch and halter a horse.
  3. Describe restraint methods.
  4. Describe proper saddling, bridling, tying and mounting.
  5. Understand basic horse care.
  6. Discuss proper grooming techniques.
  7. Illustrate hoof care.
  8. Recognize illness and give first aid.
  9. Develop proper riding techniques.
  10. Demonstrate proper riding position.
  11. Utilize training aids.
  12. Demonstrate training techniques.
  13. Prepare horse for specific horse show events.

Evaluation Standards

Instructor evaluation of the student’s competency in each subject area will be measured during the semester by written examination and by laboratory exercises.

Grades will be based on the percentages made from each of the areas listed above along with attitude, attendance, and participation.
